Millennia Media HV-3D 8 Channel Microphone Preamp Used, Excellent. This is a great mic preamp, probably the clearest sounding preamp out there.

I've owned several of these over the last few years, I like them very much, and this one is in very clean and excellent shape with studio use only. Although the Millennia Media HV preamps are known the world over for recording classical music stunningly realistic string quartet recording, piano recitals, orchestras I've also had especially good results recording rock drums, acoustic guitar, mandolin, fiddle and other folk and rock instruments, upright jazz bass and, yes, vocals. My technique for rock and jazz recording, with this crystal-clear HV-3D preamp, is to record an instrument or vocal (that traditionally would have been recorded with a saturated Neve or API or tube preamp) and (a) leave it as-is to cut through a mix with unbelievable clarity, or (b) run the recorded signal through a modern ultra-realistic plug-in like the world class Universal Audio simulations of Neve, API, or tube preamps. Now you will have the best of all worlds, and can go back at the very end of mixing a CD and switch preamps.

Clear, Neve sound, API sound, other preamp sound. If you try recording the original signal with a saturated preamp, and decide you don't like the saturation, you can't remove the saturation and are stuck with it. That's when using a great clear, unsaturated preamp like this HV-3D is a wonderful solution. Record a set of drums through all eight channels of HV-3D, then maybe leave the overheads alone for cymbal clarity, but add in an API preamp sound enhancement to the individual drums, etc. Using any plug-in you already own.
