The Aux out does run at a lower level however. That's just because the transformer has a slight step-up to it, adding about 6dB of gain. It also has a simplified Pultec style EQ that sounds very smooth, and the 2nd or 3rd harmonic drive circuit partly adapted from their NT-02A Saturator. These days I'm mostly mixing, and bought a Saturator, which is mainly why I'm parting with this unit.
The "Harm" circuit adds harmonic distortion that varies with the amount of input gain applied. Both modes do some soft clipping and allow for more apparent volume while smoothing and reducing peaks. It can be driven into full-blown distortion, and has attitude for days.
With mic, line and instrument DI inputs, you can use this box for just about any tracking or mixing task. I have even run my mix buss through the unit on occasion, just for some added color. On vocals, the 3rd harmonic circuit, steel output transformer and a little EQ are a pretty magic combination.I often ran no saturation on my lead vocal, but then more saturation and aggressive EQ on my backing vocals. So with one box, you can get some pretty varied tones and textures out of it. Synths are another thing that do great through this thing. Take a thin pad or lead and make it very fat and fluffy.
